Frequently Asked Questions?

QuestionWhat sets UMA apart from other training?

AnswerThe most significant difference of the UMA Teacher Training Program versus another Montessori program is our focus on the inner preparation of the adult, along with a thorough understanding of the Montessori philosophy. Our training is comprehensive, requiring serious commitment on the part of the student. The student will receive a well-balanced core curriculum, based upon the original tenets of Dr. Montessori's philosophy. The didactic material presentations are in depth and involve hands-on participation by each student.

QuestionDo I need to intern at a Montessori school to complete my certification?

AnswerThis is not a requirement, however, we do highly recommend that you seek an internship, assistant, or volunteer position in a Montessori classroom setting while participating in the UMA program. This allows you to experience and put into immediate practice your written training. There is no substitute for "hands-on" experience in the classroom.

QuestionAre you associated with any other Montessori organization?

AnswerUMA is an independent organization. We are licensed by the State of Washington to provide Montessori teacher training and certification for the primary-age level (2 1/2 -6 years of age). UMA is also a member of the Pacific Northwest Montessori Association, and the Washington Federation of Private Career Schools and Colleges.

QuestionSince I would like to secure employment by a certain date, will you allow me to complete the course in 6 months?

AnswerThis course may be comfortably completed within 12 months, if proceeding at a consistent pace. Rushing you through the course would be jeopardizing the quality of your education and the program. For your benefit, and the benefit of children, we will not compromise our standards of excellence. Also, we have found that most school administrators are willing to work with students who are receiving an effective Montessori education.

QuestionWill I be fully certified as a Montessori teacher?

AnswerYes. The United Montessori Association is licensed by the State of Washington, which grants to the graduate full certification as lead teacher in a Montessori primary classroom. Our graduates have excellent success in securing employment, due to the demand for well-trained Montessori educators. In seeking employment, we recommend that you research individual hiring needs and practices in your community.

QuestionAre you MACTE accredited?

AnswerIt is not a requirement for Montessori certification. MACTE requires a minimum 400-hour practicum, in addition to a physical training facility. Along with other major colleges and universities who offer distance learning, UMA meets a profound need to adults who are unable to attend on-site classes. Therefore it is not practical, nor is it necessary for Montessori certification.

QuestionThe director of a Montessori school informed me that they will hire only graduates from their own training background. Is this the norm?

AnswerIt is not the norm. We believe that any Montessori school or organization claiming exclusivity is, unfortunately, out of harmony with the Montessori community at large. Our code of ethics encourages our graduates to respect and support any organization that advocates the true principles of Montessori education.

QuestionWhen may I start the course?

AnswerSince this is an individualized program, you may enroll at any time. Students applying during the months of June - August may begin after September 15th. We do encourage you to contact us today. We consider applicants in the order they are received.

"The purpose of formal education is to produce not temporary students, but lifelong learners. To fulfill this goal, the structured environment has to reflect the outside world. In so far as possible, I present all life in miniature to the children within the (Montessori) classroom. This means the environment is rich, varied and beautiful."
